Bronx born artist Sue Barrasi began painting during her childhood in the Hudson Valley. After earning a BA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, she embarked on a brief career as an illustrator where she created various ads, book and magazine covers, postage stamps, and backdrops for theatrical productions. After extensive travel in Europe, she continued her artistic training in painting and sculpting at the Art Students League and the Ridgewood Art Institute.
Sue has been awarded numerous ribbons for her work, as well as grants and residencies, and maintains active membership in the Oil Painters of America, the Salmagundi Club, Women Artists of the West, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, the American Artists Professional League, Audubon Artists, Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center and is a lifetime member of the Art Students League. She serves as a juror for local and national exhibitions and her works hang in private collections, galleries and museums throughout the United States.
When not painting plein air or in her studio, Sue teaches adults and children throughout the New York Metro area as she continues to compete in regional and international competitions.
"I often wonder what is the purpose of a painter's life. I truly believe there is power in Art, a painting can heighten our senses and grace one's soul with pure joy. Brushing strokes of energy on canvas I try to express the innate beauty surrounding me. Whether I am exploring the abstract possibilities of paint, inebriated by the colors found while painting outdoors or adhering directly to my studio set up, one thing remains constant ~ I become mesmerized by the beauty of light. Painting is not just my passion but my addiction. It is my intent to create serene but compelling images, letting emotion guide my work. I know that painting makes me a better person but it is my hope that my artwork can bring joy into your home."
