Karen Maloof

Karen graduated from Syracuse Unversity in 1977 with a B.S. in Social Work.  While there, she learned black and white photographic skills at the Community Darkroom located in the basement of the Newhouse Communications School.  Her love of photography continued when she moved to NYC.  After her day job as a paralegal, she interned at Photographics Unlimited, a b&w darkroom and studio facility.  Becoming enthralled in alternate b&w photographic processes, her photographic work in the 80’s and 90’s, “Karen Maloof Painted Photography”, incorporated b&w printing techniques, transparent oils and color pencils to create limited editions of painted photographs. Due to the tranquil nature of the imagery, her work was published internationally by poster and greeting card companies such as Chromline, Catch Publishing, Portal, and others.  It was included  in many corporate, hospital and private collections.

In the late 1990's, Karen and her husband left New York City to raise a family in New Jersey.  She decided to learn how to paint without using a photograph being her canvas and took painting classes in local art centers.  Her serene imagery is still evident as she continues to explore the landscape around her.

Statement

As a photographer turned painter, I continue to search for environments that surround me with a sense of calm. My knowledge of the black and white photographic process is a tool I naturally use as I have transitioned to being a plein air and studio painter. My understanding of values and the changing light has helped me use light to evoke an emotional response in my painting. Learning how to convey my impression of a location is a continuous pursuit which I find exhilarating and being able to portray a spot where you would feel a moment of contentment brings me such honor.  One of my favorite loves is to walk through an area and as I become in awe of what I see, set up my easel and paint it.    My work is comprised of plein air paintings and studio work based on sketches, photo references or plein air pieces themselves.
