Diane Rosen is a New York-based artist and writer. She studied at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on a French Government Painting Fellowship, the Art Students League in New York City, and Columbia University where she received a Master's degree. She has taught art privately as well as high school and college levels, including at Parsons School of Design/The New School in Manhattan. Her award-winning work is exhibited widely, and has been featured in publications such as The Pastel Journal; Pure Color: The Best of Pastel; and American Artist magazine. Rosen's paintings are in private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
StatementEngaging the tension between control and accident, familiar and strange, text and subtext, my work is informed by energies of dynamic interaction. Not least of these is the intentional, ongoing interplay of realism and abstraction, a duality I see as complementary rather than contradictory. My subjects are grounded in realism but contexts are ambiguous, while mixed mediums can weave unpredictability into deliberate process. Through this aesthetic of contingency, I am interested in challenging fixed narratives and valorizing uncertainty in the transformative dance between order and chaos that moves all life forward.
