Linda Pearlman-Karlsberg

A painter and draughtsman, Karlsberg’s work is about light: about the conflicts of light and shadow, desolation and beauty, and about the emotional responses light provokes, encompassing portraiture, the figure, landscape and still life.

Her childhood was spent in a small MA suburb where she grew to love the natural world and spent hours exploring and immersed in the woods and countryside. Linda has always drawn and painted, a practice that began in grade school and continued throughout her life. Pearlman Karlsberg studied visual art at Boston University’s College for the Arts, with particular mentorship from artist-professors Conger Metcalf, Arthur Polonsky, David Aronson, and Philip Guston. She earned both BFA and MFAs magna cum laude at BU, was a teaching assistant while an undergraduate, and a graduate teaching fellow in painting as a graduate student. After earning her MFA, she continued to teach drawing, design, and painting at Boston University, The Art Institute, and other Boston area colleges.

Pearlman Karlsberg has shown her work extensively including recent solo exhibitions at Diana Stelin Gallery, Brookline, MA; Five Points Art Gallery, Torrington, CT; the Atrium Gallery at the John Joseph Moakley Courthouse, Boston, MA; the Edward Hopper House, Nyack, NY; The Interchurch Center Gallery, NY, NY; the Newton Public Library Gallery, Newton, MA; and the Daniels Gallery HRCA, Boston, MA. Her work was presented in notable group exhibitions at Dedee Shattuck Gallery, Five Points Art Gallery, Art Complex Museum, PEG Center for Art & Activism, Berkshire Art Museum, Monmouth Museum, American Women Artists, The Drawing Rooms, Alpers Fine Art, Steamboat Art Museum, Fountain Street Art, Piano Craft Gallery, Canvas Fine Arts, Circle Gallery Maryland Federation of Art, Cahoon Museum of American Art, Trustman Gallery at Simmons College, Thompson Gallery at Cambridge School of Weston, Heftler Gallery at Endicott College, New Britain Museum of American Art, Annapolis Maritime Museum, Foundry Art Center, Westbeth Gallery, Whistler House Museum of Art, Danforth Art Museum, National Steinbeck Center Museum, Noyes Museum, Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, Point Park University, and The Art Gallery at Univ. of Maryland, among many others. Pearlman Karlsberg’s artwork was chosen in 2008, 2013 and 2020 for the “8 Visions” exhibition at the Attleboro Art Museum.

She is recipient of numerous awards for her drawings and paintings, and her work has been featured in art periodicals, blogs and newspapers, and shared in numerous catalogs. Linda’s work is in public and private collections throughout the United States.

Statement

My work is about light: about the conflicts of light and shadow and about the emotional responses light provokes.

In series focused on exceptional outspoken women, portraits, skies, water lilies, landscapes, and still lifes I probe life’s fragility, struggle, contradictions, and inscrutability. These areas of figurative realism offer rich possibilities to celebrate moments of beauty and wonder found in individuals and the world, but also to grapple with the world’s, natural environment’s and individual’s inherent fragility and challenges.

A bittersweet sadness tussles with the pleasure natural beauty engenders. These artworks, so dependent on the light of the transient moment depicted call up temporality and all it implies in nature, in our lives and in the lives of those around us. The pain of tragedy reverberates throughout life, often as beauty, joy and fulfillment enlivens it. These images call on us to acknowledge the layered complexity of every moment we live in, or confront.
