StatementEileen Brady Nelson – Artist’s Statement:
The work I submitted is from a new series, The Pandemic Journal, 2020-2022. The Cyanotype collages and color images I made while sheltering at home during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The decision to delve into color imagery and embrace the spontaneity of the cyanotype process was a departure from my roots as a black & white photographer. Using everyday objects, PPE gloves and masks, in the photograms I was attempting to document our lives and make order out of chaos. The large color images are for the most part a document of my collections, including art journals.
I have always photographed “Close to Home” often with a 4x5 inch view camera. But this work necessitated a more direct approach; photograms and digital imagery seemed the proper fit for this project.
My photographic education began at The International Center of Photography in the late 70s. Under the guidance of mentors Via Wynroth, Lisette Model, and David Heath, I cultivated a deep appreciation for the art of documentary photography.
