Kate Buggeln picked up the camera following a long and successful career in retail and fashion. Whether the work is figurative or abstract, Kate’s intent is to communicate a mood, spirituality, mystery, or all three. The result can be dream-like or a puzzle. Imitating the painters and potters she grew up with, Kate uses a physical process. Many of her abstract images are created by deliberate camera movements in low light and sometimes, what emerges appears a painting. But when the weather, water or place are right, she is drawn to the figurative possibilities. Kate also writes a creative blog called “The Snapshack” which shares impressions of art, life and her photography. She is the former Co-President of Piermont Flywheel Gallery, and has been featured in galleries in Rockland County, NY and the Tristate area.
StatementI am drawn to mystery and the spiritual. My camera seeks out a specific mood, usually a contemplative one. Self-taught and with an impatience for post processing, I aim for results which are provocative and instinctual. As such my works contain a single digital exposure and while edited, do not use Al. Any distortions are created by movement, fabric, fog or reflections. Coming into my artistic own later in life, I have little time for an artist's angst. I am making up for lost time and for better or worst, what I create is my own
CvI live in the magnificent Hudson River Valley, and the towns and natural places it nurtures are an inspirational well, serving me as they have other artists for many generations. The valley is ever in motion, its impermanence a daily, provocative constant to get out of bed, grab the camera and shoot. My photography is always on exhibit and available for purchase at katebuggelnphotography.com and Piermont Flywheel Gallery in Piermont, NY (celebrating its 32nd year), and is regularly shown at regional and New York City shows.
